Anodised, Powder-Coated or PVDF? A Straight Answer on Aluminium Finishes
Three finishes, three completely different pieces of chemistry, and one word — “coated” — that gets applied wrongly to all of them. Two of the three are coatings. One isn’t a coating at all. Knowing which is which changes what you specify, what you warrant, and what the facade looks like in year twenty.
It starts with how the colour gets there
Powder coating and PVDF are both applied finishes. A polymer film is put onto the aluminium and bonded to it — powder electrostatically then oven-cured, PVDF roller-applied to the coil and cured at 240°C before the panel is ever formed. Both are genuinely durable. But in both cases the colour sits on the metal, which means the coating has an edge, a thickness, and an interface that can in principle be breached.
Anodising is not a coating. It is an electrochemical conversion of the aluminium’s own surface: the metal is submerged, current is applied, and the aluminium’s natural oxide layer is grown, thickened and then sealed with colour locked inside the pore structure. The result is part of the metal. There is no film to peel, no edge to lift, nothing to flake off, and nothing that can be scratched away to reveal bare aluminium underneath — because the anodised layer is aluminium.
That single distinction drives almost every practical difference that follows.
What Euroclad supplies, and why we supply both

Euramax PVDF is the answer when the brief demands an exact, unchanging colour. The Q3 2026 range spans 2-layer HDP, 3-layer matte HDP metallic, 2-layer FEVE and 3-layer PVDF Design, with coastal warranties from 15 years (Gold) to 20 years (Diamond) and up to 30 years Platinum inland. Powder coating is the third finish you will be offered elsewhere. It is a legitimate, widely used architectural finish with an enormous colour range and a lower price point. Our reservation is narrow and specific: as an applied film it depends entirely on its own integrity, and on Euroclad’s own material data standard powder-coated aluminium is rated to C4 — not the C5 severe-marine band. Within a kilometre of breaking surf, that distinction stops being academic.

The coastal test
Aluminium starts with an advantage no coated steel has: it forms its own protective oxide film, and it keeps doing so at cut edges, drill points and fixing penetrations. Damage a coated steel panel and the substrate is exposed. Damage aluminium and it re-passivates.
Anodising takes that native behaviour and engineers it — thicker, sealed, coloured, and warranted. Lorin’s 20-year coastal warranty reflects that, and it is why anodised sits in the C5 band alongside copper, zinc and the Euramax Diamond specification, rather than in the C4 band where standard painted and powder-coated products sit.
For context, this is the same reasoning behind our standing rule on painted steel: standard Colorbond and standard Unicote are not ideal within roughly a kilometre of breaking surf. It is a good product with a limitation most people are never told about. Anodised aluminium simply doesn’t have that limitation.
Weight, spans and substrate
At roughly 1.4 kg/m² per millimetre of thickness, aluminium is the lightest of the premium cladding metals — Lorin’s 0.8 mm coil lands near 1.1 kg/m². That buys longer spans, bolder cantilevers, folded and curved geometry, and far easier engineering on retrofit work where the existing structure was never designed to carry facade loads.
Underneath, we specify plywood as the standard substrate — typically 18 mm to roofs and 15 mm to walls. It is more economical than the alternatives, delivers a visibly better finished plane, and clips and fasteners hold considerably better in it. Fibre cement or steel decking is used where a non-combustible substrate is genuinely required in a fire or BAL zone — not as a default.
Lorin coil can be formed to Euroclad’s architectural profiles, including standing seam, flat-lock, interlocking panels and cassette panels. Profile availability for a specific colour and run length is worth confirming with us at specification stage.
A finish with a long international record
Lorin is new to Australia. It is not new: continuous coil anodised aluminium has been specified on institutional, commercial and civic architecture internationally for decades, which is precisely the evidence base you want behind a facade finish. There are no completed Euroclad Lorin projects to show yet — the range has only just landed here — and we would rather tell you that plainly than dress up somebody else’s photography as ours.
